In The Twilight by Elise
Link to story.
Plot I know you must be immune to all the praise and accolades thrown at you at a regular basis, but I must say, In The Twilight has become one of my most favoured stories. Ever. It's real, it has Jess half-naked in it, and I like Rory in this. My God, it's all I could ever ask for. It starts with a description of Rory's present life. She is married, unhappily so, with a cold lawyer husband and a housewife life. Suddenly, a chance encounter brings her back to Jess, and the start a secret love affair, with neither of their significant others aware of this. It ends with a startling revelation and a most unexpected (yet not unsavory) ending. Yaaah, you make me want to dance naked around my house, Elise. You do.
Characterization As I mentioned, Rory is highly likeable in this story, which is not that easy to pull. I have a severe dislike of Rory and her silly decisions, but this Rory, and her silly desicion right here doesn't bother me one bit. Her fear of disappearing turning into a fear of disappearing alone shows great dynamic in her character, and her voice is so clearly Rory that it made my eyes water in the end. Jess is written with sort of a vindicative light, as he later confronts Rory with his feelings (or lack thereof). While the connection they have is still there, Jess has long ago moved on, and the only one who seems to be getting anything real from this is Rory. His dialogue is great: witty and refined.
Style/Flow The first part of the story had me down a little, as Rory's unhappiness and desperation was so evident. However, when Jess makes an entrance, it changes everything, from feeling to situation. Your style of writing puts emphasis on this event somehow. This goes on with the rest of the story. You pull an audience in, and that's a very important factor to style. You keep them pulled in, and that shows smooth flow.
Structure/Grammar/Spelling Balanced, beta'ed, woo! There is, like, one part where you forgot to put a space in between "Tell me" but I can't seem to find it now.
Things To Work On Like what? Sheesh. I swear, though, I am seriously trying to find something, but I can't.
Parts That Rocked My Socks The story itself is great, not preachy at all, and if it is, there's reason for it. It's not some story written to validate your loyalty to Literatis, nor some lame one-shot all about sex. It's life through characters people have already invested in. I love Jess and Rory's first meeting with each other, and the dialogue that follows. It gives the story a sparkle. The ending is my favourite, though. While there's an obvious dynamic to Rory's character, her husband also changes, even if this transformation happens unnarrated. And even if this is the case, it's still believable because it does't happen all at once in the end.
